Dont know if you all read any Anime, and by most Anime purists, SJ is absolute carbon copy crap, but hey, fuck you. It entertains!
Luffy is dropping bombs like Armando, Ulquiorra is blasting into his resureccion, and Nagato/Pain buttfucking Sagemode Nana boy. Yes, I am a nerd, but you are too.

yeah, that's what i keep hearing. that one piece is the best shonen manga out right now. i suppose i'll have to keep reading, but it's kind of daunting how much i have to read thru just to catch up.
not to mention that i have to catch up on gantz and berserk, too.
also, check out bakuman and fairy tail. bakuman brought to you by the same team from death note, if i remember correctly. it's a manga about 2 dewds trying to make it in the manga business. it's fucking genius. fairy tale is probably 'one piece lite'. the guy straight ripped oda's style, but IMO still pretty entertaining.
also: on a whim, i bought the anime Air Gear box set. yes, it's kind of about rollerblading, but it's more like gang warfare on a massive level. the animation is nothing to write home about, but it's funny as hell and the story is intriguing.

yea... i like the anime of one piece more than naruto/bleach as well tbh. I know you read the manga but the anime series is also better to me.

OK, SPOILERS AHEAD FOR YOU GUYS THAT HAVE NEVER SEEN THE MOVIE:
it's obvious the metaphors went above your head.
the messages were consistent throughout the movie, and it only flip-flopped when it was necessary. in fact, it helped progress the message of the movie.
amidst the carnage taking place throughout the film, there were always juxtaposing scenes depicting something beautiful happening. this helped to better illustrate the polarities, or dichotomy if you will, of LIFE ITSELF! war and peace. life and death. violence and harmony. the movie had a strong anti-war sentiment, and it was brilliant. violence begets violence. the cycles of revenge hurt everyone, all parties involved.
the only one privy to that lesson was the mother. although blind, she had the most insight out of every character in that movie. she alone knew what the message was, and when she died, that's where everything became... ...well, everything turned to shit.
also, they emphasized man's needless pursuit of eternal life. man, struggling to conquer disease, disregards that which is most important: the people and experiences, and lessons that life gives us. that we are dumb to fight fate, and whatever theological being you adhere to believes the same. for us to learn what we can in this life, so that maybe if we are fortunate enough to live another, we might retain some of these sensibilities, and truly live a good life.
whatever god is depicted thinks man to be foolish in his puruit, thus the catalyst for everything to happen in this movie. that much is apparent.
some say the movie is preachy, but fuck it. let everyone take what they will from it. be it a kickass movie they don't understand, or a kickass movie with a brilliant message.
also: you can't fault the art direction and cinematography. the world and it's environments were vivid, and well depicted. although 90% cgi rendered, it was easy to be drawn in completely.
i'm not sure what else you'd like me to elaborate on, but Carmichael S. Doan, what exactly did you find lacking? not enough KARATE??! NOT ENOUGH TITTIES??!
well lemme tell you one thing, mister: it's not that kind of movie! >:I

Oh, I understood the premise of the movie rather well. Its an elementary theme. I myself, view the world in very similar ways. Although, I found that the presentation in general was clumsy, heavy handed, and for lack of a better word, unimpressive. Yeah, there are nice scenes with sweet spinning robo man kicks and chops, but a convoluted storyline trying to teach values and ideals? OK SO HE KILLED THE DUDE AND HIS BITCH, AND NOW THE TABLES ARE REVERSED, OH MY SWEET LORD?! I, for one, would prefer dialogue to progress the storyline, not emoting japanese men. And its not the language barrier, either, because im quite familiar with foreign films and their slow melting face pace progression. The whole time, I was waiting for a mind blowing kick to the face, and was met only with predictable plot twists and generic morals. War is bad? Everything cyclic? Come on man. I could have wrote that storyline when i was 12.

I should also note, that its not that i didnt like Casshern at all. Its an okay movie, and somewhat entertaining. Perhaps i also fell victim, to the hype. When a movie is hyped like that movie was for me, and it doesnt meet or exceed my expectiations, Im prone to frown at it. And snob it to some degree.

i agree that it's an elementary theme, but consider the circumstances in which the time this movie was made. we were making an illegal invasion into a foreign country. and for reasons completely different than what the general public were led to believe. it's as relevant today as it was the day the movie was released.
with it's elementary theme acknowledged, this film (in my mind) brought something fresh to compensate for this fact. prior to this film coming out, i expected tons of robo-chopping, cybernetic combat goodness. i got all that, and more. thought provoking commentary is always welcome in my opinion.
i chose not to base my opinions on the merits of this film's actors, but on the characters as a whole. each one representing a vital piece necessary in illustrating this story. asion emoting men aside, (and yeah. the badguys did go a bit overboard) i still appreciated how they were created, how they lived, and how they ultimately died.......again. hehe
honestly, i fell victim to the hype, but not in the same way. i found it better than i thought it was going to be. i honestly thought it would be a typical futuristic cyber smash up, with only a bit of japanese men screaming at each other. BOY WAS I WRONG. i got a better cinematic experience out of it.
glad you see it my way, mike!

If you consider jumping on the media bandwagon of bashing the War, then i guess you could say it was thought provoking. It just didnt bring anything new to the table. When i want entertainment, I want an experience that broadens my horizons, or just dumbly fascinates me. The film did neither, but produce predictable conclusions. Not only that, but that dickhead should have died instead of the sweet bad man with wild hair. Not only did he get rocked once by some soldier scrub, he came back and got raped again by the same guy who fcked his first life up. Thats the kind of message Satan promotes. Youre not a satan worshipper are you?

jumping on the anti-war media bandwagon?
this movie came out in 2004, meaning pre-production started in 2003, if not late 2002. during that time we were just getting started in our illegal war. people were still pissed about 9/11, so the bandwagon hadn't even arrived yet. even still, is it that unfathomable that some of the japanese population harbor anti-war sentiments? y'know...being that they both committed/subject to war-time atrocities during dub-dub-duece?
so the film didn't do anything for you, fine. i pled my case, and yknow what the jury said? they said, "casshern: for the crime of being both awesome and profound?"
GUILTY.
PeeEss: although i sometimes do have hedonistic tendencies, no. i don't worship voldemort.

What they intended in 2003, and what i saw in 2007 have a distinct correlation. I WAS privy to the swollen tide of anti war sentiment. Hence, I, personally found it another beat on the drums of Liberal Blah! Im sorry i cant transport my brain mentally back 4 years to an era where the anti-war slogans werent blasting my jaws off. (note, i didnt support the war, either) So, for me... in 2007, when i viewed it.. it did NOT provoke any stirring emotions or mind boggling revelations. Another cog in the machinery of Obama! Damn you Obama!
And, likewise, Im just stating my opinions on the movie. Its not horrible, but its rather plain to me. DBZ evolutions may just one up it. I have faith.

Naruto: Sons punching Dads? C'mon. Horseshit, I think Yondaime should have bodyflickered his fist through Naruto's face and then opened the cage for him to deal with Kyuubi on his own. All the story details are old news. I knew Madara was the leader from the start. He's manipulating Sasuke, just like he's manipulating Pein. All the bad guys in Japanese manga use deception. It's like the most powerful, evil force ever.
Bleach: Kurosaki is a bitch. He's emo as fuck. He might as well slash his wrists before every battle, then blow his brains out, and then, finally go all out after he's /emoselfdestructed for ultimate power. I prefer Ulquiorra 10x. even though his arm got sliced off. This screaming banshee with a sword and a stylized hockey mask is shit.

naruto: he knows who his dad is now. and it just so happens that his father is the baddest motherfucker ever to walk that earth. and finally, pain is finally going to die. everyone knows he's a puppet, so meh. the faster he dies, the faster they can get to showing more madara and 8-tails.
bleach: this chapter finally does what everyone's been saying all along. in order for him to compete with the badasses that are the top 3 espada, he's going to have to become one himself. IMO, this comic has taken DBZ's place as the premier "watch me power up again" fight comic, which i'm totally fine with. i love all the characters, except maybe soi-fong. she can eat turds. the comic isn't ground-breaking. it's just a kick ass fight comic. i don't expect any more than that.
